Welcome to Tips and Tricks Thursdays! I thought I would attempt to post a D.I.Y. As some of you know my house is under construction. Everywhere I look there is something that is either changing or needs to be changed. The one room that seems to be making progress is the bedroom. Little things have made it the room I am beginning to love! I thought I would share this easy fun project with you all today.
Quite a few (older) houses out there have normal closets (not a beautiful walk-in closet we all like on Pinterest). A lot of these closets have bi-fold doors. Although bi-folds can be handy if you don’t have any space in front of the closet, they can date the look of the room in my opinion. They can also limit the space you have on either side of your closet and of course the back of your (bi-fold) door. I had not even thought about our bi-fold doors until one day my boyfriend looked at me and said, I am going to make those into real doors. So off he went and in about 30 minutes or so we had “real” doors on our side by side closets.
Here is a step by step guide on how to get your very own
This is what we started with. Two closets side by side (please ignore the mess)
Un-hook the inner pin from the track on each door. (should be easy to do). Remove the pin at the top of each closet door (you may need a screw driver to pry these out). At this point your bi-folds should just be swinging loose.
Cut (6 altogether) pieces of wood the exact width of each door (1×2’s are ideal but 1×3’s or 1×4’s will work). We used 3 pieces of wood per door . On the back of each piece, apply wood glue. Make sure you don’t get to close to the edges as it might squish out when you place it on the door.
Using a finishing nailer (or a hammer and nails) attach each piece of wood with 8 to 12 nails. We attached 1 at the top, another in the middle and the last on at the bottom.
Should look something like this once attached. And LOOK! Its so easy even I can do it 🙂
Once all 6 pieces of wood are glued and nailed to the back of the door you can attach the double magnet clasps. Because of the track used for bi-folds you need to attach a spacer (piece of wood) so you can fasten your magnet clasps onto. Just screw or nail a 2×2 piece of wood into the frame behind the track. Once that is in place you can attach the magnet clasps right onto it. Just make sure to line up your magnets with the plate you will attach onto the back corners of your doors.
These clasps come with their own hardware and can just be easily attached with hand tools.
Using a level and tape measure mark the new positions for the knob holes. Once marked use a drill to create your new holes. Fill the old holes with wood fill and relocate your exciting hardware.
Admire your amazing new doors! This is the time you get to envision all the different design possibilities. Just remember these doors can not hold a huge amount of weight. If you are planning to attach a mirror on the back of the door make sure its a light one.
I plan to paint the inside including the wood pieces to camoflague everything together.
Now all I need is to make these doors look beautiful! Let me know if you guys have any ideas of what I can do! Hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions.
